My name is Heather Cannon, and I am presently a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, licensed only in the state of FL. I have maintained my license since 2014. I am also a Qualified Supervisor for MSW students and graduates seeking licensure in the state of FL. In 2021 I earned my EdS in School Counseling and maintain my certification as a School Counselor in the state of FL. I presently work full time for Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital Behavioral Health Center as an outpatient Group Psychotherapist.
My background is vast and encompasses many areas that have contributed to the knowledge and experience I have today. I earned my bachelor’s degree from FAU in Social Work and went on to work for Department of Children and Families as a Dependency Case Manager in the Medical Foster Care Unit in Lauderhill, FL. While working towards my MSW, I interned at the VA Medical Center in West Palm Beach where I learned skills specific to supporting veterans with their mental hygiene and wellness. After earning my MSW from Barry University, I took time away from my career to have two children. Once they were both preschool age, I resumed my career at Children’s Medical Services, where I worked as a Social Worker supporting their many clinics they host to bring specialists to the Treasure Coast. I later accepted a position for a community-based agency, Helping People Succeed, where I provided therapy to children and adolescents in their homes and schools. After several years with Helping People Succeed, I accepted a position at St. Lucie Public Schools as a School Social Worker. In this role I facilitated both groups and individual sessions for students in need of mental health support. I later transitioned to the role of Mental Health Counselor and was assigned to an alternative school in the district to support the mental health needs of the students on that specific campus. My last three years with the school district were spent in the role of School Counselor. In this role I continued to provide mental health counseling in addition to Child Find services and 504 eligibilities at the schools I was assigned to.
Over the course of my career, I have earned specific certifications to broaden my knowledge and training. I presently am trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution Focused Brief Therapy, and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. I was trained to be a trainer of Youth Mental Health First Aid and have facilitated several trainings for the local school district employees and the school resource deputies and officers who are assigned to schools. I no longer maintain my certification to train YMHFA, however I feel that experience is worthy of acknowledgement. I was one of the people sent from St. Lucie Public Schools to support Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School in their reopening after the tragic shooting that took 17 lives. And I am married to a Deputy Sheriff, which has broadened my interest to supporting the mental health needs of the first responder community.
